Morning Keynote: Curious Women Change the World, Andrea Ramage, Somersault Consulting
Asking herself “How can people rescue themselves from a burning apartment building?” Anna Connelly invented the fire escape in the 1900s, which became part of many mandatory building safety codes across the United States. Grace Hopper wanted to know “How can computer programs for business software be user-friendly, too?” so she wrote COBOL, and was awarded the first ever Computer Science Man of the Year Award in 1969 for it. Our world has been shaped by women who were inspired to find answers to hard questions. Through these tales and others, this keynote speech will show how anyone can harness the power of questions to inspire new solutions and make a difference to their customers and communities.

State Regulatory Panel – Scott Hitchcock, Office of Regulatory Innovation & Assistance (ORIA)
As a result of this workshop attendees will learn about the resources available to them that can assist with questions about Washington state’s regulatory requirements. For example, what licenses, permits, and fees are required to start a business in …? How can I get help with understanding my tax liabilities? If I have employees, what are my obligations and which agencies do I need to work with to comply with state regulations? ORIA publishes a Small Business Guide and a Regulatory Handbook – both are available on – and you learn how to access these resources as well as get contact information for each Small Business Liaison Team member from 26 state agencies.
When people think of the term “consumer” they often think of individuals purchasing goods and services. However, businesses and business owners are also consumers and can be targets of scams and fraud. This workshop is designed to warn small business owners about common scams and fraud that target business owners as well as providing best practices for a business to protect their consumers. As a result of this workshop attendees will learn how to recognize, avoid, and report scams as well as how to interact with the agency regarding consumer complaints.
