Amy Leneker, Compass Consulting

AMY LENEKER is a Leadership Consultant and the founder of Compass Consulting.  Having spent over 20 years in state government in various leadership roles, she is known for her trusted advice, her track record of delivering results, and her optimistic attitude.  Amy is a Certified Trainer and has delivered training to thousands of executives, leaders and practitioners. Because of her ability to engage and energize audiences, Amy has appeared before hundreds of audiences. As a first-generation college student, she believes in the power of education and holds a Masters of Public Administration.  Amy and her husband have two mostly well-behaved children (and two rarely-behaved Labradoodles) and make their home in Olympia.

Luncheon Keynote: Building Self while Empowering Others: the Alaffia Story
Prairie Rose Hyde, Alaffia

PRAIRIE ROSE HYDE founded Alaffia in 2003 with her husband, Olowo-n’djo Tchala (Founder and CEO) whom she met during her time as a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa. Rose grew up in rural Washington state from humble beginnings but obtained her bachelor’s degree from Whitman College with Honors in Biology. After her service in the Peace Corps, Rose pursued further studies at the University of California, Davis receiving master’s degrees in international agricultural development and integrative ecology; her knowledge of the relations between plants and human activity lent itself to the formulation of the indigenous-resource-based body products Alaffia is known for.

In 2003, the couple started their first shea butter cooperative in West Africa, and within a year, they began selling shea butter body care in local retailers. In the first few years of Alaffia’s establishment, Rose did everything from the creation of the formulas, production, finance, website design, to customer service. Recently, Rose has shifted her focus to Alaffia’s non-profit partner, the Global Alliance for Community Empowerment (a.k.a. the Alaffia Foundation).

Today, Alaffia directly impacts over 17,000 individuals in West Africa through its fair trade activities. The Alaffia Foundation Empowerment Projects impact tens of thousands more, and include 5,115 healthy births, planting 81,073 trees, donating 9,592 bicycles to Togolese students, building 14 schools and providing school supplies to 37,426 students. In Tumwater, Washington, Alaffia is now a team of 140 employees making, shipping and marketing the finished products in over 11 countries.

JENNY MERCER started her side hustle while working in the corporate world where she managed a national marketing team for a mortgage company. She has since left her 9-5 and now runs her own successful business. Jenny focuses on coaching her business partners; guiding them to success and growth. An introvert herself, she is excited to share with you some of the adaptive behaviors she has learned to help her honor her introversion and manage her energy while also building a successful business.

Hear the real-talk from lending specialist Cathy Griffith on what it takes to to find financing for your small business. During this session you’ll learn about different ways to fund your business including traditional financing, SBA loans, alternative lenders, and more!

CATHY GRIFFITH has been with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) since 2018.  She currently serves as the SBA Seattle District Office’s Lender Relations Specialist (LRS).  Prior to her role as LRS, Cathy managed a SBA loan department for a community bank in Washington.

As LRS, Griffith works with nearly 100 Lenders and Certified Development Companies to deliver SBA guaranteed financing to small businesses. Griffith graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in political science.  She and her husband, Jim, reside in Burlington, Washington.

Attend this breakout session to hear how your small business and personal development can be served by your local library! Hear how the various databases through the Timberland Regional Library can contribute to your business and professional success!

HEATHER KING is the Senior Librarian at the Timberland Regional Library’s eLibrary and has over 18 years experience as a reference librarian. Heather is an expert in reference databases and teaches the uses of these databases to other TRL employees.

KRISTINA KAUFFMAN is a librarian in the eLibrary at the Timberland Regional Library Administration office and has over 25 years experience as a reference librarian. Kristina is an expert in all the reference databases, and is the TRL expert at Reference USA.
